Mission:

We are dedicated to improving the quality of life for our customers by ensuring comfort and safety, through proper fitting footwear that promotes healthy legs and feet.

Company History:
Art & Sole was started in a small North Portland garage in 2001 by Marty Krogh Jr. who was moving from a ten year career in Graphic Design (click here to see design Portfolio); back to his roots as a "shoe dog". "I grew up selling and fixing shoes in my dad's shops and I always knew that fixing shoes was a pretty good outlet for my creative side". With my graphic design background I was able to create a very compelling and effective niche website that quickly enabled people from all over the country to send their beloved Birkenstocks to my shop. After a year of splitting my time between freelance graphic design and refining my repair skills I walked away from the handful of design clients I had, and leased the space Art & Sole now occupies. This location in North Portland looked a little neglected upon first glance but it didn't take a lot of vision to see that with a new light rail line under construction, this would no doubt be an excellent location over time. Rumors of a New Season's Market were confirmed with a quick phone call and that was all I needed to take the plunge (along with my business plan). Since opening we have expanded into the space next door which houses our inventory and extra equipment. We also convinced Mark at Revolver Bikes that this corner would be great for his bike shop ensuring us a really cool neighbor.

Sustainability:
*(special notice: As of 1/1/07 Art & Sole has cut back our repair services to only minor repairs, sewing rips, shoe shines and stretching; in order to grow our retail business). Every day people come into our store and talk about how shoes simply can not be repaired today; like they used to be. That is true. It takes creative new approaches and willingness to take chances and the possibility of failure. New materials, adhesives, techniques and tools are used in our shop which simply did not exist a 10 years ago. This is not to say that we don't get old school on this stuff. In fact, there are still many great manufactures building high quality shoes, boots and sandals, based on decades of tradition and we have the ability to combine traditional techniques with new solutions, that keeps this stuff on the road. Having said that I will say that about 1 in 20 pair that comes through our doors is turned down simply because it's not worth investing in, but you just never really know until you bring it in and we take a look at the challenge. We take pride in performing high quality repairs that prevent more junk from being buried in the dirt or floated on a garbage barge.

Community:
Art & Sole is dedicated to our community by donating to the following organizations: SMART, this program gets to the heart of the matter simply by reading to children.
