Mission:
We are dedicated to improving the quality of life for our customers
by ensuring comfort and safety, through proper fitting footwear
that promotes healthy legs and feet.
Company History:
Art & Sole was started in a small North Portland garage in 2001
by Marty Krogh Jr. who was moving from a ten year career in Graphic
Design (click here to see design Portfolio);
back to his roots as a "shoe dog". "I grew up selling
and fixing shoes in my dad's shops and I always knew that fixing shoes
was a pretty good outlet for my creative side". With my graphic
design background I was able to create a very compelling and effective
niche website that quickly enabled people from all over the country
to send their beloved Birkenstocks to my shop. After a year of splitting
my time between freelance graphic design and refining my repair skills
I walked away from the handful of design clients I had, and leased a
store- front on North Interstate Avenue; for just over 6 years. In April
2010 we relocated the shop to Alberta Steet in North East Portland;
about 2 miles from the old location on Interstate.
Sustainability:
*(special
notice: As of 1/1/07 Art & Sole has cut back our repair services
to only minor repairs, sewing rips, shoe shines and stretching; in order
to grow our retail business). Every day people come into our store
and talk about how shoes simply can not be repaired today; like they
used to be. That is true. It takes creative new approaches and willingness
to take chances and the possibility of failure. New materials, adhesives,
techniques and tools are used in our shop which simply did not exist
a 10 years ago. This is not to say that we don't get old school on this
stuff. In fact, there are still many great manufactures building high
quality shoes, boots and sandals, based on decades of tradition and
we have the ability to combine traditional techniques with new solutions,
that keeps this stuff on the road. Having said that; I will say that
about 1 in 5 pair that comes through our doors is turned down simply
because it's not worth investing in, but you just never really know
until you bring it in and we take a look at the challenge. We take pride
in performing high quality repairs that prevent more junk from being
buried in the dirt or floated on a garbage barge.

program gets to the heart of the matter simply by reading to children.
